Eighth month

At the beginning of the this month, the Spring has officially (according to calendar) arrived to New Zealand, so, as expected, the weather has been improving, making the outdoor activities more desired.

So, during this month, I have been sailing in Wellington harbour and snowboarding (in the south Island) with my friend Shaleen (from Philipines), who is a nurse in the Hutt Hospital.
Sailing has been very pleasant, as it was a lovely day...on the other hand, snowboarding (in Mt. Cheeseman,  Christchurch - my first time in south island), was not so good, as the weather conditions were not perfect...nevertheless, I still keep getting amazed with the great landscapes, anywhere I go. The way from Christchurch to Mt. Cheseman (the ski resort), for instance: a plain that, in the horizon, is "decorated" with beautiful mountains covered with "white powder"!

Ah, one of the most popular sport events has started during this month of September: the Rugby World Cup 2011. So, one more pretext for party! The environment is SWEET (as Kiwis say)...and it reminds me about the Euro2004 in Portugal...I so miss that times (except the defeat, in the finals, against Greece). All Blacks (performing their famous Haka) did very good matches...smashing all the teams in their way. I am obviously supporting All Blacks, as "Os Lobos" (portuguese rugby team) are not present in this edition of the Rugby World cup! :)

During this month I got back to water polo (after almost 1 year of absence)...the destiny took me to train together with the NZ national champions...I am just not sure whether they play in the junior or in the senior league. Anyway, they are very good...they would probably beat the advanced level from the place where I used to have my trainning in Portugal (in Estadio Universitario). Whataver...the trainning is just once a week and I am joinning them for now, while there are not many players trainning (as the season only starts in 2012). I try not to be too bad comparing to them...but it seems to be an impossible task. I just want to have fun (as I really like this sport) and keep fit! :)

Ah...also went to a brazilian film festival, not to forget my mother tongue! :)

Seventh month

If I would have to describe this month using one single word, I would use "saudade".

Firstly and obviously, saudade that I still haven't expressed in this blog, but that I feel since the moment I left Portugal: missing the family, the friends, the culture, the places...though it doesn't make me feel sad...just happy to know that sooner or later I will be there again! :)

Secondly, saudade, because Bastien, the french guy who shared the same flat with me for about 6 months, with whom we ended up having a beautiful friendship, left back to France!!!

Also saudade, because Johan, this one more great french guy, quiz and indoor soccer team mate...who went back to France.

Then, "saudade", since some time after Bastien's departure, I have moved to Normandale, leaving the place which I will miss because of all that it meant to me: settlement in New Zealand, outdoor soccer team, jogging, bike trails, wonderful landscape, Bastien and my former landlord, Marc.

Anyway, I have moved because I've decided to. I have moved to live with a very good friend of mine (and indoor soccer team mate), Sudhir. My new landlord and flatmate at the same time. The views from here are simply awesome. A great view to the Wellington harbour...and, you know what? At the time I was moving it started snowing in Wellington...at the sea level!!! As I heard, it was the only time in 80 years...and, actually, a lot of snow...enough to make snowmen, to play with snowballs...and to have a great white landscape all around greater Wellington!!! :)
Besides that, I have discovered that my new home is surrounded by some beautiful green nature, the Belmont Regional Park...only 15 minutes running from my place...a huge forest/park, covering about 3500 hectares. Great to go for some jogging or biking!!! :)

Saudade, also because I was missing the snowboard. Last time I did it (not counting with my awkward experience in Sierra Nevada, where, after 100 m, I ended up being transported by a snowmobile to the clinic of the ski resort) was in Slovenia, almost 2 years ago (thanks for reminding me about skiing in Slovenia, Mateja...and sorry for my memory failure :P), and Bulgaria, 2.5 years ago! So, I missed that times during my first New Zealand snowboarding experience...at the middle of August!!! I went with Mike (indoor soccer mate)...next day, his girlfriend (Bronie) and a friend of them (Esther) came as well...nice times...was really missing this snow adrenaline!!! :) We were lucky with the weather...and the snow was lovely!!! :)

Finally, the last but not the least saudade...more french people farewell: Anne-Helene and Laureline leaving to France at the end of the month of August. They were doing their internship in my department...during these 4 months of intership, they became very good companions: sharing our joy, sadness and, especially, partying a lot altogether!!! A promise has already been made: I will go to France to visit them and Bastien, when I come to Europe!!! :)

In conclusion...during this month of August, I felt like an emigrant...in France (because of so many french people surrounding me), which used to be the most popular destiny for portuguese emigrants, mainly during the 70's, when many portuguese people felt "forced" to leave their own country to have a decent life.
So, in respect to it, I am sharing with you one of the most famous portuguese emigrant author (and song), the great Dino Meira and the music "Meu querido mes de Agosto".
This song is about the meaning of the month of August for these emigrants: the time when they were coming back to Portugal (usually, from France), when they could enjoy their life, spending some money that they have been saving for 11 months . Despite being commonly "labeled" as bimbos (couldn't find a better translation, rather than yokel), they are mostly admirable people - though, sometimes, they show off too much (with their tunning cars, and so on).

Sixth month

Once again, we went to the indoor soccer final (division 3 - last season we have been paying in division 4))...this time we lost...but we got a trophy anyway (2nd place one).

Despite July being one of the worst months of Winter time in New Zealand, me and Bastien have been biking a lot: in Wainuiomata, on the Rimutaka trail and a bit of the famous 42Traverse!!! :)
The Rimutaka trail was very nice...me, Bastien, Dion and Briget were biking; there were several tunnels (that used to be part of the railway)...we did a return trip...which, in total, was about 40km.
When we came back to the car, I realized that my wallet, cell phone and backpack (with note and text books inside) were stolen...what to do? Obviously, report it to the police and "play the waiting game"!!! :(
Since Bastien is about to leave New Zealand to go back to France, me and him have been on a crazy weekend - we have decided to do Tongariro crossing (famous 1-day walk of about 18.5 km) in one day and the 42 Traverse (biking trail of about 47 km) in the next one. We have used Alistair's place, in Tokaanu (near Taupo, where we had already been in June) as base for our adventure.
In the end, because of "logistic issues", we ended up in crossing half of Tongariro and we had to return when we were almost at the top of Tongariro mountain, it was too slippery because of the ice (and we had no proper gear, like ice axes and crampons). Anyway, great landscapes...and a lot of snow!!! :)
Also because of  a "logistic issue", we couldn't manage to complete the 42 Traverse - instead, we decided to do some loop, so that we could end up back at the car (couldn't manage to find any transportation from ending to starting point where we have left the car). But in the end, we missed the route and had to update the plan...and twice more again...until we had realized we were a bit lost. Fortunately, Bastien had his GPS and...headlamp, since it was completely dark, and we manage to find the way back to the car. The result was 2 exhausted guys driving back to Wellington on Sunday evening...well, at least no one got (seriously) hurt! :)

Fifth month

Ok...I usually don't speak about the places where I usually spend about 8 hours of my day, from where I often hear the birds singing...and these places are: my bed and my work place (my office and the labs). Regarding my bed, it is comfortable...though I will move soon from Wainuiomata (consequently, to another room and bed); my work place (www.irl.cri.nz), on the other hand, is located just in the bottom of the Wainuiomata hill, which  it surrounded of a beautiful natural green colour.

Finally, after 4 months I left Wellington region...I have been travelling in the north island, in between Wellington and Auckland, where I was in some natural geothermal pools in Tokaanu (Tongariro national park), have been to Waikato river (river starting from Taupo lake, where we can find the famous Huka falls and the Aratiatia rapids), walked a bit of the famous Tongariro crossing (some famous walk in the Tongariro National Park, surrounded by Tongariro, Ruahpehu and Ngauruhoe mountains, these 2 last with snow on top), visited Taupo (name of the lake and a town in the middle of the north island), bungee jumped (from about 80m high) nearby Taihape, rafted rapids in the Tongariro river (river ending up in Taupo lake - Tongairo National National Park), visited some areas with some geothermal activity (as the "Craters of the Moon, near Taupo and Wai-O-Tapu, near by Rotorua) and dived in the beautiful Waihi Beach, in the Bay of Plenty.
